What is tumescent liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction differs from traditional liposuction in that the doctor injects a saline solution into the targeted area beforehand. The solution contains epinephrine and lidocaine. While the lidocaine numbs the treatment site, the epinephrine constricts the blood vessels and thus reduces bleeding. The solution also makes the fat cells swell up to three times their original size and makes them easier to locate and remove.
At Georgia Center for Female Health, the surgeon will use a probe that emits a laser or ultrasonic energy to liquefy the fat cells. A micro-cannula attached to a suction device is then inserted into the area to extract the fat. Both the ultrasonic energy and the laser allow the surgeon to carefully sculpt the patient’s body into more attractive and proportionate contours. Since fat has a lower melting point than other tissues, the technologies also eliminate the risk of harming nearby areas.
Other advantages of the procedure include the following:
- Ability to remove large amounts of fat
- Quick recovery
- Only one procedure is needed
Who is a good candidate for tumescent liposuction?
The ideal candidate for tumescent liposuction will be a patient in good overall health with realistic expectations.
Like traditional liposuction, tumescent liposuction is not a weight loss method; it is used to remove fat deposits that have resisted exercise and diet. In tumescent liposuction, the surgeon removes fat from a specific area to improve the patient’s proportions and is thus a type of body contouring. The patient should, therefore, be within 25 pounds of their optimal weight.
Potential candidates for this procedure include those who:
- Do not smoke
- Are not pregnant nor breastfeeding
- Are not diagnosed with a disorder that impair or slow healing
- Are in good general health
