Tumescent liposuction is becoming more and more popular for body contouring. Unlike traditional liposuction, tumescent lipo allows the patient to be awake and removes fat without great trauma to the surrounding blood vessels and other tissues. These two factors alone make tumescent liposuction less risky than traditional liposuction and greatly lowers the patient’s recovery time. Tumescent Liposuction vs. Traditional Liposuction
In tumescent liposuction, Dr. Stewar tadds a large volume of Klein’s solution to the area. This solution contains saline, a pain killer and a vasoconstrictor to keep the patient comfortable and to narrow blood vessels to reduce bleeding. The solution also makes the area swell up and go rigid, which makes it easier for Dr. Stewart to operate. It takes about 45 minutes to add the solution and 30 minutes for it to infiltrate the layers of tissue. The doctor also injects a local anesthetic into the treatment area.
With both traditional and tumescent liposuction, the fat is removed via suction through a vacuum cannula and damaging it with the back and forth movement of the cannula itself. Over time, the body removes these damaged cells.
Dr. Stewart gives the patient compression bandages then discharges them. In traditional liposuction, the patient would have been under general anesthesia, the incisions would have been much larger and sutured when the surgery was over, and the patient would have probably spent a night in the medical facility. The vacuum cannula itself would have been much larger than the one used for tumescent liposuction. The diameter of the vacuum cannula for tumescent lipo is usually 1.5 to 3 millimeters, and it usually takes over an hour to remove the fat.
The amount of fat tumescent liposuction removes for body contouring is less than that removed in traditional liposuction. In traditional liposuction, the patient loses 17 to 21 pints of fat, while in tumescent lipo 6 to 10.5 pints of fat is removed. However, the small size of the cannula makes it possible for the doctor to remove fat in tighter areas of the body.
Recovery From Tumescent Liposuction
The recovery period from tumescent liposuction is much shorter than it is for traditional liposuction. Depending on how much area of the body was treated, the patient can return to work within days as opposed to weeks, and their need for analgesics is minimal. Though there will be some swelling, it will subside, and the patient will see a more slender silhouette after a few weeks. Improvements will continue and peak after about six months.
