How Do We Treat Infertility?
Infertility has many possible causes, so our first step will be to determine the cause. Infertility caused by an infection or hormonal imbalance can often be treated by medication. If the problem is a physical defect or injury of the reproductive system, the patient may need some type of procedure.
Before prescribing infertility treatments, our doctor can perform laparoscopy if it is suspected that the patient’s infertility is due to a physical problem. The laparoscope is a thin rod with a tiny camera attached at the end. The doctor will insert the laparoscope to examine the area.
In a hysteroscopy, the gynecologist will examine the uterus and look for problems like fibroids, scar tissue or polyps. The doctor will perform this procedure on patients with a history of miscarriages, endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes or abnormal bleeding. A fertiloscopy is a newer technique that lets the gynecologist examine other parts of the reproductive system.
What Causes Infertility in Women?
Most cases of female infertility involve problems with ovulation. Erratic or absent periods are a large sign that a woman is not ovulating normally.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of female infertility. It is characterized by small cysts that grow on the patient’s ovaries and cause hormonal imbalances.
Other causes of female infertility can include the following:
• Uterine fibroids
• Other physical problems with the uterus
• Fallopian tubes that have blockages caused by endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease or scar tissue from surgery for an ectopic pregnancy
