Vaginal dryness: Is there a remedy?
Vaginal dryness affects quite a number of women between the ages of 45-60. Vaginal dryness occurs when the glands in the cervix fail to produce natural lubricants, of which also help keep the vaginal canal clean by removing dead cells. In addition, \vaginal lubrication helps prevent infections such as due to its slightly acidic nature. The Bartholins glands, which are located at the entrance of the vagina, produce extra lubrication during arousal to aid in sexual intercourse.
Although vaginal dryness is prevalent in post-menopausal women, many women aged 18-50 experience vaginal dryness during sexual intercourse as well. It is quite common in lactating mothers, women who’ve had a hysterectomy, and women who’ve been going through chemotherapy. Vaginal dryness may also be caused by some other factors: allergies, cold medications, antidepressants, and autoimmune disorders.
One of the effects of vaginal dryness is painful sex. Because the skin around the vagina is dry, it gets damaged quite easily during sex. Even the tiniest bit of friction can cause immense discomfort. When one continues to experience pain during sex, they might lose the desire to have sex completely. In addition, vaginal dryness can make it hard for a woman to exercise, sit, stand, work, or even urinate, which can impact quality of life. In some cases, it might cause a thinner-looking vulva.
One of the most common ways of treating vaginal dryness that occurs as a result of low estrogen levels is through topical estrogen therapy. The estrogen can be injected, applied or infused. The most commonly used are:
- Estring – This is a soft, flexible ring that is inserted into the vagina and releases a steady stream of estrogen.
- Vagifem – This is a tablet that is inserted into the vagina using a sterile applicator.
- Estrace or Premarin – These are creams applied to the walls of the vagina using an applicator.
