Are you dealing with noticeable stretch marks caused by significant weight gain or pregnancy? Stretch marks are a common cosmetic complaint and develop due to the stretching of skin beyond its usual range. Their formation is an aesthetic concern that can lead to feelings of diminished self-esteem and make a person feel unattractive.
We live in an exciting era of advancements in the field of cosmetic treatments. Many innovative treatments have come to market to better tackle skin problems like stretch marks. One such technique is known as micro-needling.
A Look at Micro-Needling
Many people dealing with stretch marks would like to correct the problem without resorting to surgery or complicated procedures. Micro-needling offers an effective, minimally-invasive technique for safely reducing the appearance of stretch marks, as well as fine lines and wrinkles and other skin problems.
The procedure involves passing a special device over the skin. This device is covered with many tiny micro-needles that penetrate the skin to a shallow depth. The device creates many tiny channels in the skin, which the body responds to by effectively resurfacing the areas and nearby skin.
Micro-needling triggers the body into depositing fresh collagen and elastin into the “micro-injuries” and surrounding skin tissue. Old skin cells on the surface of the skin are removed and replaced by healthier, more youthful skin cells. These new skin cells display fewer signs of stretching than the older ones.
What Does It Feel Like?
Since micro-needling is a minimally-invasive procedure, only minimal discomfort is involved, if any. We apply a topical numbing agent to the treatment area prior to treatment in order to ensure patient comfort.
Micro-needling is not normally associated with significant side effects. However, some minor skin redness and tenderness is not uncommon. These effects are actually signs that your body is responding properly to your micro-needling treatment. Any side effects from a micro-needling session can be expected to resolve themselves in the hours and days following the treatment.
Micro-needling patients often return to our office for follow-up treatments, since the effects of treatment are cumulative. It is important to realize, however, that you must wait a set amount of time between treatments to allow time for your skin to heal completely.
