Brittle, dull facial skin is usually caused by a loss of moisture retention, a decreased amount of collagen produced by the body, and certain environmental factors. Treating this problem with nutrient-rich creams and ointments may help a little, but what the body really needs is a natural stimulator, something that kickstarts the actual production of healthier skin tissue. The PRP facelift procedure uses the body’s own blood to help rejuvenate the facial skin. PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, and platelets are exactly what we use to promote smoother, suppler, and more evenly toned skin for our clients who choose this type of cosmetic procedure.
PRP works because the platelets are so highly concentrated in the plasma that they cause a reaction by the body. When we injure ourselves and bleeding occurs, the platelets come to the rescue. They form a mesh when exposed to oxygen, and this is how clots form. However, the body needs to heal itself, and so the platelets now perform an additional task. The proteins and other growth factors they contain are used in the first step of new tissue creation. This is why cuts and scrapes begin to heal so quickly.
Until recently, the introduction of concentrated amounts of platelets to stimulate healthy tissue growth was used only for the treatment of injuries. Today, the technique is used as a cosmetic treatment for dull, brittle, wrinkled skin.
How It’s Performed
We will first schedule a consultation with the client and observe the facial skin closely. We’re looking for discolorations, superficial brittleness, dull patches, as well as non-set wrinkles and smile lines. All of these can be treated with a PRP facelift.
The procedure is performed in the comfort of our office. We draw a small amount of blood from the client, spin it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets and plasma from the red cells, and then spin the plasma down again to get an even higher concentration of platelets. The resulting fluid is made into a sort of fibrin gel mix.
We then inject the mix into certain areas of the face. The body will respond to this procedure as though an injury has occurred. This is natural because of the high concentration of platelets now present in the skin. Dermal fillers may also be used to further enhance the results.
We may schedule a series of treatment sessions, spaced out a set amount of time apart, for optimal results. The results aren’t going to be immediate, but over the following months, the skin becomes clearer, suppler, and more evenly toned. Collagen production also increases in the weeks following treatments, an added bonus to already healthier skin tissue growth.
